Laelen Rojas, the protagonist from Even in Arcadia, my new comic being launched in March 2011.
There is prestige in learning to manipulate the smallest particles that make up our world, a prestige that any family with enough means is going to want for their children. Laelen was born into a situation no different, and thus did what was expected of her.
The normal course, however, felt awkward and underwhelming. Learn the process of magical manipulation, set yourself apart as to be a spectacular catch for any husband, and then settle down and raise his family. Anything else that presented itself to Laelen was salvation, and she embraced it.
Now she's in a foreign land, working where the natives would rather she leave. Her presence, her position and what she will become is a threat to their way of life, and there are those who take that very seriously...
---------------------------------------------------- Even in Arcadia there are things that no one is willing to acknowledge. Schisms between nations, underhanded politics, deals between government and drug runners.
Laelen is in a foreign land, the first of her kind to be trained in the Mage art of Immersion. With a petulant teacher, a community that would rather her leave and now an insistent scholar who is demanding to study everything, the future of her development and eventual mastery of magic is very much under threat.
Were you inspired by that painting by Nicolas Poussin where there is a tomb with "Et In Arcadia Ego Sum" written on it? (it means "I was also in Arcadia")
Awesome work on the texture!

You like comfiness, nostalgia? [link] Or badassery, rebelliousness? [link]
It is based on the Nicolas Poussin painting, I wrote an extensive essay on it for my senior thesis in visual culture, and I've always wanted to do an inspired work. The phrase "Et In Arcadia Ego Sum" can also be translated into "Even I am in Arcadia". The meaning is very much debated
